THE New Zealand Pacific Training Centre has a mission to produce Fiji's first Olympic medal.
On Friday, the NZPTC opened a new chapter with the launching of its new junior academy at its Nadi campus.
The NZPTC is also Fiji Rugby Union's high performance base in the Jetset town.
NZPTC chief executive officer Subhas Chandra said the junior academy would
target 50 students yearly.
He said the NZPTC was offering scholarship to students wishing to be part of the
junior rugby academy to kick start things.
He said the scholarship was worth $50,000 for two years.
"The start of the junior rugby academy is another milestone that we have managed
to achieve," Chandra said.
"The dream for this campus is to produce the first Olympic medal for Fiji and we
are working towards that. This rugby academy will be no different as we want to
change the life's of the people. We must understand what our country is good at
in the Pacific and what our strengths are."
A total of 20 players have already been offered scholarship's.
Australian great Mark Ella officially launched the rugby academy.
The former Wallaby urged the scholarship holders to utilise their knowledge
gained from the academy and broaden their rugby skills. "It all comes from the
heart," Ella said. "If you want it then you can get it."
The academy's main goals are to identify and develop talents, produce good rugby
players, help Fiji achieve a better world ranking and change the life's of the
players.
Chandra said they involved the major stakeholders in a bid to make the academy
successful.
He said some overseas schools had already enquired about signing up players from
the academy.
Chandra said the NZPTC plans to build an indoor multi-purpose courts for Futsal
and basketball.
The NZPTC Nadi campus is located less than a minute's drive from the town
centre.
